lofi ho – Would You Rather

by | Mar 31, 2018 | Song of the Day

Today we journey to Oberlin, Ohio to visit lofi ho. This is lofi ho’s second Song of the Day. “Now You’re Here,” released by lofi ho in February, was our very first SOTD, forty-three days and forty-three songs ago. It remains one of our most memorable features, as the song’s Todd Rundgren-esque piano hook is still stuck in our heads.

“Would You Rather” describes a relationship that is, like many relationships, a bit out of balance. But the singer seems to be handling things pretty well. There’s no sense of self-delusion; she understands the situation and she can deal with it.

You tell me everything I want to hear
Your sweet dishonesty is so sincere
And I know if I were to disappear
You’d just play Fortnight…

Lyrically, “Would You Rather” is a great step up from “Now You’re Here.” There’s a not-quite-sadness at play, but it is leavened with humor and attitude. On the musical side, the melody is minimal but effective. The mellow, easy keyboards are countered by an aggressive drum track. The song is interesting, listenable, and honest.

Lofi ho describes herself as a “trans gurl makin rad tunes in various styles in my lonely dorm room.” There’s good stuff coming out of there, and we look forward to hearing more from lofi ho in the future.
