Kelvin Candela – Bird Dirt

by | Apr 25, 2018 | Song of the Day

Two city boys from New York were sitting in a bar talking about their wives. One said, “You know, my wife says I need a hobby. She says all I do is sit at home, sit in my office, or sit in this bar. She says I need to do something that will get me outdoors.”

“My wife says the same thing,” his friend replied. So the two began discussing outdoor activities that they could take up. Eventually, one of them mentioned duck hunting. They liked the idea of duck hunting but, being city boys, they had no idea how to go about it. So they called over the bartender. “Say, Joe,” one said. “You seem like a man of the world. What kind of equipment do we need to start duck hunting?”

“Well,” the bartender said, “You need a couple of shotguns, and you need a dog to bring in the ducks. You guys are in luck. I have a couple of shotguns in my attic you can borrow, and my neighbor has a black lab. That’s a great dog for bringing in the ducks. If you come over to my house, I can get you fixed up.”

A short time later, the two city boys were out in the Long Island marshes hunting ducks. They hunted all day without getting a single duck. Finally, one turned to his friend and said, “Ya know, we’ve been out here all day and don’t have any ducks. Maybe we’re doing something wrong.”

“I know,” the other said. “Maybe we’re not throwing the dog high enough into the air.”

“Bird Dirt” is from Kelvin Candela’s recently released four-track EP, Goose. The band comprises Neil Forde (vocals/guitar/drums/keyboards/bass) and Brian Connor (vocals/guitar/drums), recently joined by Matt Knepper (bass). The trio is based in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They describe their music as “drawing from a diverse array of sounds… with hints of Folk, Psychedelia, and a healthy dosage of harmonies.”

You can support deserving independent musicians like Kelvin Candela by visiting their Bandcamp page, listeing to their music, and downloading your favorite tracks. In addition to “Bird Dirt,” I recommend “Kingdom Come,” from the brand new EP, Bozman. The band’s music is also available for streaming on Soundcloud. Bonus Trivia: In le système international d’unités, Kelvin is a measure of temperature and Candela is a measure of luminous intensity.
