KELBAS – Clarinets

by | Mar 25, 2018 | Song of the Day

The hardest rock, metal, and punk that you will encounter charges out from the states of the former Soviet Union. But today we hear a softer voice of the region, with lyrics that have been read and admired for one hundred years.

“Clarinets,” by Ukrainian producer KELBAS, features lyrics by poet Pavlo Tychyna (1891-1967). The words are from Tychyna’s poem, “Not Zeus, or Pan, or the Dove-Spirit…” included in the 1918 collection, Clarinets of the Sun.

Not Zeus, or Pan, or the Dove-Spirit
Just Clarinets of the Sun.
I am in a dance, a rhythmic movement,
In immortal dance – all the planets.

I was – not I. Just a thought, a dream.
All around are ringing sounds,
And the tunic of creative darkness
And blessed tiding hands.

I awakened – and already I am You.
Above me, below me
Worlds glow, worlds run
Like a musical river.

And I watched, and springtimed:
The planets harmonized.
Forever I learned that You are not Wrath,
But only Clarinets of the Sun.

(Translation by Michael M. Naydan from Pavlo Tychyna, The Complete Early Poetry Collections, 2017)

KELBAS is Ukrainian producer Vladyslav Zarichnyuk. On the Bandcamp page for “Clarinets” (Кларнети in Ukranian), we learn that the track “describes his opinion on limiting the freedom of word.” The lyricist, Pavlo Tychyna, is a controversial figure within Ukrainian literature. Although his early poems are noted for their imagery and symbolism, his later works are remembered for their support of the Communist regime, including the lyrics of the state anthem of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. “Clarinets” was created by KELBAS “to honor the poet and to tell his spirit it is still alive.” Completing the project required an effort extending over four years.

“Clarinets” is a recent release by Kyiv (Kiev) – based Dobryi Bober Records. The name translates as “Kind Beaver,” so naturally we here at Reverb Raccoon support our fellow quadruped. Other releases from Dobryi Bober Records are available on the label’s Bandcamp page. Readers of Reverb Raccoon should definitely check out the 2017 album by Peredmova.

Additional releases by KELBAS are available on his Bandcamp page and on Soundcloud. And be sure to follow him on Facebook.
