Jean Ritchie – One I Love

by | Apr 24, 2018 | Song of the Day

Jean Ritchie has been called The Mother of Folk for her role in preserving traditional Appalachian music, and in making the “modern” world aware of its beauty and timelessness. Born in the Cumberland Mountains of southeastern Kentucky, she later migrated to New York. She met, performed with, and influenced a diverse range of musicians including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Doc Watson, and Emmylou Harris.

“One I Love” is from Mountain Hearth and Home, a compilation of tracks from three albums released by Elektra Records between 1952 and 1962. One can easily hear the connection between American mountain music and traditional English ballads such as “Scarborough Fair.”

Jean Ritchie died in 2015, at her home in Kentucky, at the age of 92. More information on her life and music can be found on Wikipedia and in an AllMusic review by Steve Leggett.
